Sheathing the frame and welding

The hull is now completely sheathed.

The plating process goes as follows: First I would hang the plates in place using my gantry and align the joint, check that all the reference lines aligned, then tack the plate at the joint. Before moving the plate into position I had ground bevels all the plate edges prior to fitting so I would be able to get full penetration of the weld. Once the plate edges were tacked I would go inside the hull and start pulling the plate to the longitudinal framing and tack weld at this point. Once in a while I would tack weld to the frames ( frames run perpendicular to the ground longitudinal framing runs parallel to the ground), but I would rather weld to the longs as this is the correct way to attach the hull sheathing. Heavy welding to the frame will cause the hull to have the starved horse look witch is a sunken look between the frames and is extremely unattractive.

After plating the hull the next process was to start the welding of the hull. This stage is where some real work begins as the fun and amazement of watching the boat take shape is replaced by the grunt work of welding it all together. I am using a Lincoln Power Mig 200 for welding with a 12 lead and a 25 lead. I like the 25 lead but I have to use .045 wire in the lead to get the machine to push wire that far without kinking the welding wire. The 25 lead is very convenient in regard to not having to move the welder, but one has to avoid sharp bends in the lead as this causes the wire to bind and messes with the feed rate of the wire. Im also using a auto darkening helmet with a welding type respirator that fits under my helmet. Ive found that the respirators last about two days before I have to replace the filters. My other safety gear consists of a heavy leather jacket, welding gloves, exhaust fan, and ear plugs for both the loud sound of the welding arc and also keeps sparks out of my ears.

The welding is a critical process ( as one could guess on a metal boat) in that one wants the hull to maintain that fair shape. Fair is what one calls a hull as you move your eyes or hands over the sides of the hull.... she has to look and feel fair. Over welding or welding too much in one area can cause the hull to distort or twist loosing its fair shape. My welding of the hull went as follows: weld the longs to the frames, weld the hull joints below the water line inside and out, weld the above the water line joints outside only, weld the hull to the longs. My hull plating is 1/4" below the water, and 3/16 above the water. Being a relatively beefy sheathing, the hull plates are not as easily distorted, but I was extremely careful none the less of moving around the hull and not laying a weld down more than 3" long at any one time. Some people call this skip welding or chain welding witch is a 3" weld, skip 12" then another 3" weld and so on until all the welds join together. Moving around the hull skipping like this prevents heat from building up and causing the metal to distort.

The welding of the hull was a huge job that took a couple of months to complete. At some point I stopped keeping track of the amount of welding wire I had purchased, but at last count I was well over 1000 lbs. I think I went through two welding auto darkening helmets, two leather jackets, and dozens of pairs of welding gloves along with a pair of boots and many pairs of jeans.

The pictures on this post show the hull sheathed without the Portuguese bridge in place.

Which Boat Gives The Most Satisfaction

This a re-print of a short article I wrote about 3-1/2 years ago. I still think it is worth a read. For those who are interested, the boats in the article are my First Mate design, and Phil Bolgers 30ft Romp.

In the late afternoon of a balmy North Queensland day, a man in his fifties sat in a small rowing and sailing dinghy, near the banks of a sandy estuary. It was not the great physical beauty of the mangrove-fringed inlet that was the object of his attention, but a clean-lined sailing cruiser of about thirty feet length-overall which sat quietly at anchor only a short distance from the sand.

As is always the case for those obsessed with boats, the man was constantly alert for the sight of something different from the normal run of fibreglass, stainless steel, and push-pit barbeques; and this particular vessel had caught his eye from a long way off. What was different about her? Well, she was free from the normal clutter of standing rigging, furled headsails, high cabin trunks and inflatables, and importantly, she was anchored in what appeared to be impossibly shallow water for a boat of her size. Above all, there was something about her character that struck him as familiar.

August and September are wonderful months way up north in the tropics, and rowing around an isolated estuary is good for the soul at a time when the sun is low – as long as you have your eyes open for crocodiles! This fellow had rowed and sailed in the particular location hundreds of times over the years, but it never lost its appeal as a sanctuary from his day-to-day work in the nearby city. His boat was a fifteen foot long plywood dinghy, fitted with the most simple of sailing rigs, along with a well-made set of leathered oars and bronze oarlocks.

The interior of the dinghy showed the evidence of frequent use – a collapsible crab pot in the forward space against the centreboard case, a large water container under the thwart, a camera in a waterproof case in a bucket aft and several sorts of other paraphernalia. The internal paintwork had endured its fair share of scratching, and the bundled sail carried grease and mud stains. But the boat was in a good, solid state of repair, and she looked like a capable sort of ship.

The man sat looking at the larger boat for several minutes, resting his hands on the handles of his nicely balanced oars. Then, with a few deft strokes, he spun the sailing dinghy in her own length and sent her in towards the sandy shore beside the object of his attention. As he passed close to the bow of the big cruiser, he noticed that the clear water was only about two feet deep, yet the anchored boat was definitely well afloat. As he continued to paddle along the length of the boat, it became apparent to the oarsman that the boat he was looking at had come from far away. She flew a foreign flag, and his experienced eye could pick the signs of a vessel which had traveled across oceans.

Stepping ashore on the firm sand, our friend dragged the plywood sailing dinghy up until she was safe from drifting, and then he pulled a wooden galley box out from under the main thwart and set a kettle to boil over an old alcohol stove. Had he been in a more exposed location, the man would have moved the boat much further up the beach, using the pair of inflatable rollers which were currently tied up under the side decks. The boat was light enough to be manhandled by him under most circumstances, and he was very grateful that he had resisted the urge to go for a bigger dinghy at the time of construction. To himself he said, “Just like Goldilocks – not too big; not too small; but just right”.

Returning his attention to the larger vessel, he studied her details once again. She had a plumb stem, with a beautifully sharp entry at the waterline, widening out rapidly to a wall-sided midsection which terminated in a shapely stern and a vertical transom of almost triangular cross-section. The overall shape of the boat put him in mind of pictures he had seen of Thames Sailing Barges, although this one did not carry leeboards like the barges. Because the boat did not have any cabin trunk (other than what appeared to be an oversized companionway shelter), the hull sides looked quite high. However, as he waded out to her in the knee-deep water, he discovered that his eyes were almost level with her deck-line, so appearances were deceiving and he could tell that this boat was much lower than the average production boat of her size.

Steam issuing from the kettle called him ashore, and as the man settled down on the sand to drink coffee, he felt the well-known demon of “Unreasonable Boat Desire” creeping up on him once again. This thirty-footer struck him as just about the ideal escape machine with her free-standing cat-yawl rig, one-and-a-half foot draft, centreboard and clean deck-line. That she was an ocean-going craft was beyond doubt, and he could see that in comparison with the average sailing boat tied up in a marina, she would be very cheap to build and maintain. In his mind’s eye he could see himself cruising the Great Barrier Reef, sailing to New Caledonia, reeling in large fish, weathering tropical storms without the slightest concern, and living out childhood fantasies related to desert islands and buried treasure. Oh no, it was all happening again…!

Now this fellow had a close friend who was known for his conservative (some would say, “boring”) views, and as he sat dreaming about the feats he could achieve in this wonderful ocean-cruiser, he could hear his friend’s voice-of-reason sounding in the back of his head. “Don’t do it,” the voice said, “you know the boat is too big.” He shook his head, but the phantom voice continued, “You know that a big boat will drain your financial and physical resources, and that you will get far more use out of your superb little sailing dinghy.” Still the voice droned on, “You can only just manage to keep the paint up to your little boat, you lazy so-and-so; how do you expect to maintain a thirty-footer?”

Turning to the right, the middle-aged mariner looked at his existing boat. She was light, and very good-looking. The rig was strong, simple, free-standing and easy to repair. As she sat on the sand he could see with great satisfaction that the lowered sailing rig lay nicely in a compact bundle to one side, well clear of his rowing position. Many times he had slept on-board, having set off after work to row or sail for a few hours before bedding down for the night on the sleeping platform he had fashioned inside the dinghy. With the boom tent rigged, he was well protected from insects and light rain, and the snug interior made him feel secure. After use, the boat could be tucked away in a corner of his shed until needed for the next mild adventure. Annual maintenance was minimal.

The afternoon sea-breeze being favourable, the sailor set the small boat’s rig (three minute’s work) and ran out of the inlet for an hour or so of sailing in the tropical evening, knowing that for him at least, the freedom provided by the small plywood dinghy was beyond price. He had built her with his own hands, and the cost had been tiny. The returns, however, had been enormous.

Mystery Model Solved

We just happened to receive a comment about design #832, sailing yacht Chance, over the weekend. The current owner has posted some images to his MobileMe Gallery. In reviewing the design this morning it dawned on me that this is possibly the design of the model in question that we posted yesterday. Looking at the general arrangement and sail plans I note the following (matching) details, aside from the obvious:
1. House geometry and number of portlights match
2. Companionway off center to starboard
3. Aft portlight after edge aligned with companionway hatch garage
4. The next portlight forward of it centered on aft end of amidships hatch
5. Extremely tall binnacle at forward end of cockpit
6. Strange hatch at after end of cockpit coaming - very small and tall
7. Keel geometry
8. Rudder geometry
9. Propeller aperture geometry
10. Date of launch is 1949, which works with the model date of 1954.

I believe the mystery is solved. Thanks to the owner of Chance for coincidentally sending us this link.

Montgomery 17 Trailer Sailor Crosses the Pacific

This is Strawanza, a custom-built Montgomery 17 trailor sailor that has crossed most of the Pacific and is enroute to the West coast of Africa.

How big does your sailboat have to be to cross an ocean? If you believe what most of the writers in the yachting press would have you believe, you need at least a 40-footer. At least that was the case until recently. In the current issue of Sail, the typical advertising-driven sailing rag with glossy full page ads for yachts costing a half a million dollars or more, the "new boat roundup" cover story attempts to explain why 50 is the new 40. The article, entitled: Life Begins at 50, profiles 38 production sailboat designs ranging in size from 50 to 60 feet.

It seems that for some reason most boat owners are always craving a larger boat, no matter what size they currently sail. According to the article, average boat size has been on the rise for years, and the author claims this is a logical progression from the days when most boats in any given harbor were under 40 feet. Logical? Please tell me why? The sea hasnt changed since the 1950s, 60s and 70s when all kinds of adventurers like John Guzzwell, Robin Lee Graham, Tania Abei, Lin and Larry Pardey and countless others were circumnavigating the globe in boats under 30 feet. What has changed is that navigation equipment, communications technology, safety gear, and boat construction methods have gotten much better. So you would think that small boat voyaging would be more popular and more doable than ever before and with a greater margin of safety.

The truth is, there are still a lot of adventurous sailors out there making incredible voyages in small boats. Just after flipping through this latest issue of Sail magazine, I came across a link on the Sailfar.net forum about a Montgomery 17 trailer sailor making landfall in Vanuatu. That may not sound all that extraordinary until you read further and see that this single-handed voyager departed from the coast of California.

Willi, an experienced solo sailor from Austria, commissioned a custom crafted Montgomery 17 from Montgomery Boats in Dana Point, California. He had read about the Montgomery 17s racing record, the strength of its construction, and proven seaworthiness of the Lyle Hess designed pocket cruiser. Montgomery 17s have cruised the Caribbean, sailed from California to Hawaii and from Cape Hatteras to San Diego via the Panama Canal, and sailed the length of the Mississippi. Many others have crossed the Sea of Cortez and have made countless trips to Catalina and the Channel Islands.

Willis voyage is perhaps the most ambitious of them all, however. His homeport and yacht club is in Namibia, on the West coast of Africa. He will sail his custom Montgomery 17, which he christened Strawanza down the coast of California from San Diego, across the Pacific, then cross the Indian Ocean, to round the Cape of Good Hope and up the West coast of Africa to home. Planned time enroute, including stopovers is around 15 months.

The photo below gives you an idea just how small a Montgomery 17 is, but despite appearances, this is a boat that can go to weather, is self-righting and can carry food, water, supplies and safety gear for 100 days at sea.

The Norvane Self Steering gear bolted on the transom is not something you see every day on a trailer sailor. Many more photos and descriptions of the modifications done to Strawanza can be found here.

Theres no question that crossing oceans in a 17-foot sailboat is not for everyone, but then again, neither is owning a 50 to 60-foot luxury yacht. There are a lot of happy mediums and lots of boats in the 20-32 foot range that can do the job in safety, a degree of comfort, and for a reasonable outlay in purchase price or refitting of a tired, old example. Voyages like Strawanza, serve as inspiration and reassurance for those of us who want to go to sea but dont want to grow old being melon farmers while trying to earn enough to pay for the boats magazines like Sail tell us we should be sailing.

Wooden Boat Show 2011

We are heading into summer and our annual boat show road trip is approaching. The destination is the very beautiful Mystic Seaport, Connecticutt. The show is the 20th Annual Wooden Boat Show.

We will have the prototype of the Paper Jet sailing skiff on display, as well as information on our many other designs, for building from all materials. We will be at Booth 13A in Tent A, with our boat set up just outside the entrance alongside our booth. In 2007 we received the Outstanding Innovation Award at this show for the Paper Jet.

Paper Jet numbers are growing worldwide. This week we have shipped plans to a builder in Thailand, who has sail #55. A Paper Jet Forum has been started recently for exchange of ideas and tips for building, rigging, sailing and tuning the Paper Jet.

Please drop by the booth or boat to see what we have, ask questions or just chat about what new designs we have coming soon.

Calculating Longitude

Last time, we decided that at 16:58:38 GMT, it was Solar Noon at my location. That was the moment the Sun reached its peak in the sky. More importantly, it was the moment that the Sun crossed my meridian -- the line of Longitude that I was standing on at that moment.

In other words, at 16:58:38 GMT, the Sun and I were on the same Longitude. So if we can find the longitude of the Sun at that moment, we will know my longitude. Its that easy.

How do we find the Suns longitude at that exact moment? From the Nautical Almanac, of course.

Daily Page, Nautical Almanac

The Suns longitude at any particular time (GMT, of course), is called its Greenwich Hour Angle, in celestial navigation lingo. More commonly abbreviated as GHA.

The Daily Page of the Nautical Almanac lists the Suns GHA for every hour of the day. Its under the Sun column on the left side, labeled GHA.

We will use the information on the Daily page to find the GHA of the Sun at  the nearest hour: 16:00:00 GMT. If you inspect the table, you will see that, at that time, the Suns GHA was 58° 35.2.

Next we need to look up how far the Sun traveled in the next 58 minutes and 38 seconds. Again, the Nautical Almanac provides the answer.

Increments and Corrections Pages
Nautical Almanac

In the Nautical Almanac, the "Increments and Corrections" pages list how far the Sun (and Moon and planets and stars) move through the sky from 0 seconds, up to 1 hour. Since we want to know how far the Sun moved in 58 minutes and 38 seconds, we turn to the 58 Minute page (click on the above image for a closer look).

The seconds are listed down the left side. The Suns incremental GHA is in the first column on the left.

If you follow the seconds down to 38, you will find the incremental GHA for 58:38. Its 14° 39.5.

If we add the hourly GHA and the minutes/seconds GHA, well find the Suns exact longitude at 16:58:38:

58° 35.2
14° 39.5
---------
72° 74.7
or
73° 14.7

And since that, dear reader, was the Suns longitude at solar noon, it was also my longitude. At least according to my sights and calculations.

So, putting the latitude and longitude together, my fix was:

N40° 40.1    W73° 14.7
or
N40° 40 6"   W73° 14 42"

Using Google Maps, we can map this location to see how we did.

The Great South Bay and Fire Island, off of Long Island, NY

On the map are two blue markers. The top one is at N40° 40 6" W73° 14 42". Its in the middle of the Great South Bay, just east of the Robert Moses Causeway, that goes out to Fire Island.

My actual location was on the beach at Fire Island, just opposite the light house, at N40° 37 48" W73° 13 03".

Those two points are 2.8 nm apart. Disappointed? Dont be! Although you will read that its possible to get sextant fixes within .2 nm, Ive never seen this in actual practice. If I can get within 5nm, I feel Im doing pretty good. In a small boat, with a healthy chop or swell, 20nm is more like it.

And 5-20nm accuracy is good enough for actual use.

If you were crossing the Atlantic, say, and were taking daily noon Sun fixes, a 5nm accuracy would be more than you could use on a big Atlantic chart. And by the time you got within 20nm, youd be on deck, scanning the horizon, waiting to say "Land Ho!" as loud as you could.

How could you improve these results?

Youd probably get more accurate sights with a good, metal sextant, like an Astra IIIb. A metal sextant will have a more stable Index Error, a better scope, and more precise vernier.

However, a sextant is only as good as the Navigator. It takes a lot of judgment and skill to line up the Sun with the horizon. Especially when the Navigator is being thrown around the companionway, and the horizon looks like the business side of a saw.

It also takes skill to plot the sights and draw a smooth, symmetrical noon curve -- particularly when the sights are not as neat and clean as you get from dry land.

This kind of skill only comes from months or years of daily practice. The kind of practice youd get on an Atlantic crossing. If youre like me, you only dream of getting that kind of practice, but at least now you know what to do if you ever get the chance!

Bottom line, a sextant is not a GPS. Thats why GPS -- lets not pretend here -- has rendered the sextant obsolete as a navigation instrument.

On the other hand, finding your location using a sextant is a heck of a lot more fun! And thats what this has all been about. A bit of summer fun, learning a new skill.

My goal has been to conduct you through this first fix with as little math and mumbo-jumbo as possible, to show you that Celestial Navigation is not rocket science or black magic. If Ive done my job well, you should be saying to yourself, "Hey, that wasnt so hard, after all!"

I hope its been as much fun for you as its been for me.

Ill try to take another set of sights next week, so you can try to work one on your own. Until then, if you have any questions, please leave them in the comments section below, or email them to john@unlikelyboatbuilder.com.

1937 Avanti Versus 2007 Anna

Heres an interesting sequence of photos that demonstrate how over a fairly long period of time the craft of boat building really hasnt changed all that much. Each sequence shows an image of Avanti (design #85), built at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1937 followed by a sequence image of Anna (design #2721), constructed in 2007 by Brooklin Boat Yard. Its incredibly similar considering 70 years separate the two boats.
