Why do we build boats

In the March/April 2012 issue of Wooden Boat Magazine the Editor, Matt Murphy, picks up on a discussion on the Wooden Boat Forum about whether to buy or build your own boat. This is an issue that is very close to my heart and soul. I would not go so far as to say that my life was aimless before I started to build my own boats but it certainly did change for the better from that first boat. It was the spark that took me into a string of builds and into a career in boat design.

I have responded to Wooden Boat with a letter to the editor, which I hope will be published in an upcoming issue. In the meantime, I have permission from Wooden Boat to publish it here on my blog. It makes this post a bit long, so I apologise. Please bear with me, I hope that you will read what I had to say.

Dear Matt,

Today I read your editorial "To Build or to Buy" in the March/April 2012 issue of Wooden Boat. Thank you for highlighting this issue. I know that I have a vested interest in the good health of amateur boatbuilding. I make my living primarily by designing boats that are intended more for amateur builders than their professional counterparts. With that "full disclosure" out of the way, I would like to comment as the amateur boatbuilder inside me that has always provided my main driving force.

I have built, with my own hands, almost every boat that I have ever owned. This started as a young child with tin canoes, sealed with pitch and paddled with the end pieces from wooden peach boxes. I have received such pleasure from creating all of those beautiful things myself, from "sticks and glue" bought from the hardware store, an enjoyment that is hard to put into words. There is a satisfaction that comes out of it that will never be understood by those who have not built a boat themselves. There is intense joy that is felt when that boat first floats and on the first sail, when all of it finally comes together and the dream is fulfilled.

There is a common saying that we have all heard many times. "The best days for a boat owner are the day that he buys it and the day that he sells it". I can see that it may be true for a boat that is bought. I cannot see it being true when you have created that boat with your own energy, with much sweat and and blood spilled in the process. I have felt sadness when parting ways with all of my boats but life has to move on.

I have built many small boats and three big ones (34-38ft). Most of this was building by myself with some help from friends or family when needed. I have a head-full of memories that will never leave me. I remember clearly exactly what led up to me losing my concentration and running my thumb through a spindle router when shaping a small part for my 38ft boat. That loss of control cost me much pain and loss of work but I will never forget the lesson learned.

I remember how difficult it was to lift my 34ft boat and slide it sidewards in my back garden, to remove it from its position on top of the mast with a spreader base through the bottom of the hull. It came to be there because nature is much more powerful than I am and had sent a Cape Town gale to pick the boat up bodily and dump it on top of my very new mast.

I remember how I cried when the person who had bought my 36ft boat from me destroyed her. I remember seeing hundreds of pieces of boat scattered among the boulders. To others they were just pieces of wood; I knew every piece of wood, exactly where I had built it into the boat. I felt that a big piece of me was destroyed along with that boat.

When you build a boat you have an affinity to it that cannot be easily described. You shape the character of that boat in the process and your own character grows along with it. I am currently rebuilding a classic British sports car that was given to me as a wreck. My neighbours, who have never created much with their own hands, have asked me if I knew how big a task I was taking on with this car. I reply that it is no big deal, any big project is a succession of small projects and I will get there, all in good time. This project is small compared with building a big boat but people who have not done such projects cannot comprehend it. Restoring a car or a boat that somebody else created long ago gives much satisfaction but it cannot compare with shaping a multitude of bits of wood into a new boat, creating an entirely new entity that would never have existed but for you and your passion, energy and endurance.

With my amateur boatbuilding hat replaced by my yacht designers hat, I must comment also on a related issue. I received an email a few weeks ago from someone who had apparently considered building one of my designs but decided against it. He said that the $400 price of my plans added too much to the overall cost of building a boat when he could buy an ageing used boat of the same size for $1000. Frankly, anyone who has that mindset should rather buy than build because he will never appreciate the effort that goes into producing a good set of drawings nor what is involved in building a boat. That particular drawing set comprises more than 20 large paper drawings and two strips of costly 36" wide Mylar full-size patterns. They show very clear detailing that was drawn in a CAD program and are printed on expensive roll-media architectural plotters. They took many hundreds of hours to prepare to a standard that can be understood by people who are not trained as boatbuilders, architects or engineers. The price also includes full access to me to ask questions if needed from start to finish of the project.

I dont understand how all of that cannot be worth $400. Maybe it is all part of the mindset that has destroyed manufacturing in USA and sent it all off to China to be made by others at both lower price and quality, turning Americans into buyers instead of creators. Get up out of your computer chair and create something. It doesnt have to be a boat, just create something for yourself instead of buying it. You will be surprised what enjoyment and sense of achievement you will get out of it.

Lining on the Yangtze

The amazing Junks & Sampans of the Yangtze by G.R.G. Worcester, River Inspector (Ret.), Chinese Maritime Customs, offers fodder nearly unlimited for readers of this blog. Whenever Im otherwise lacking for content, its a convenient fallback. As Ive been so busy lately with remunerative work (hooray!) that Ive been unable to post for some weeks (alas!), Ill take advantage of its easy pickings, with due gratitude to its masterful author.

Well into the 20th century, there was much non-motorized traffic on the Yangtze. Vessels with sails used them when possible. But once inland, there are many impediments to sail, not least being the Yangtzes famous gorges, and its many rapids. As a result, sailboats and manually-powered vessels alike were often obliged to "track" or line themselves upstream, and sometimes downstream too.

River vessels often carried large crews for the sole purpose of tracking. If it was inconvenient to land them directly from the mother ship, a small sampan like the one shown below was used. These were as short as 9 feet, with beam of 3.5 feet and depth of 1 foot, and featured a heavy rubbing strake that just kissed the lowest point of the shear. They were propelled by a yuloh, or sculling oar over the stern, built up of three sections to generate the desired angle between the handle-end and the shaft. The line running from the upper end of the yuloh to the deck or gunwale was not simply to secure it to the boat: it was essential to the technique of "rowing", used in opposition to the "push" part of the stroke to provide the "pull" motion.

"Junks Sampan" from G.R.G Worcester, Junks & Sampans of the Yangtze

The tracking line could be as long as 800 yards, and was always made of bamboo. This must have been a monster to handle. Trackers wore simple harnesses which spread fanwise from the main line. In addition to the men hauling the line, there were often one or two whose job it was to follow them, clearing the line from snags and lifting it over obstacles. The sampan would also support the line between the shore and the vessel being hauled, my guess being that this reduced the waters drag on the line and helped maintain a more efficient, straighter run between the vessel and its motive power.

In the picture below, the vessel being lined is the one in the far background to left of center, just beyond some white water. You can barely make out the tiny sampan supporting the line between it and the shore. Because the pull of the line was inevitably angled toward the shore, men aboard the vessel would use yulohs to steer the boat, playing their oars against the current to constantly maintain pressure toward the opposite bank. Many vessels had yulohs at both bow and stern. The junk nearest the viewer clearly shows a bow oar, and I believe you can detect one on the junk being lined as well.

"Hauling a junk over the Yeh Tan" from G.R.G Worcester, Junks & Sampans of the Yangtze

The two vessels in the middleground have evidently already been hauled past the rapids. Perhaps their men are resting after the effort, but it was not uncommon for a junk to be hauled all day, for days at a stretch, if conditions required.

Riverside communities maintained towpaths, either voluntarily to promote their commerce, or by regulation. In some gorges, paths were entirely cut into the living face of the rock. Photos of these rock-face paths look precarious, and no doubt some individuals, and perhaps occasionally entire tracking crews, drowned due to a simple mistep, or to being overpowered by the current against the boat they were hauling.

Its interesting to compare this all to the barge traffic of Olde England, where a barges crew was typically limited to a small family, where the towing was invariably done by horse, and where locks, not manpower, served to overcome rapid changes in the rivers elevation.

Water Rat

Edward has written in regard to the discussion about flat-bottomed hulls: -

Hello, There was a flat bottom sharpie built in England in 1898. Very unusual at the time. She was 14ft and had a sprit main and jib. Mr. Lillistone could you look at this picture of her from Dixon Kemp, and comment on what you think? Id quite like to build an historical replica to see how she went (fast by all accounts at the time as she was banned from racing). https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OYrhbqLKYyB9iQF9G3RN3HY6h4w9_WFXdAPmTale1U0?feat=directlink Regards Edward

Thanks for the comment and the drawing, Edward. I am flattered that you are interested in what I have to say, but I am mildly worried that people may think that I know more than I actually do!

Anyway, here is my opinion, and Id welcome input from others who may have a deeper understanding of the subject.

I view this boat in two separate parts - the forward sections and the aft sections. She is quite wide for her length, which immediately introduces problems with eddying around the chine. The line of the chine is very flat up forard, which also increases the problem of wild eddys forming around the chine, causing drag and wild steering.

However, the chine line in the aft sections shows a nice lift when viewed in the body plan, and I think it comes close to the optimum when hoping to prevent eddying. If you look closely in the body plan (i.e. the end elevation) you can see that the line of the chine more-or-less bisects the angle between the bottom and the topside panels.

So, I think that this boat would perform well as long as she was sailed flat with the fore-foot lifted clear of the water - which she would naturally do considering her large sail area and tucked-up transom. Her shape looks similar to plenty of racing dinghies from the last forty or fifty years. If built lightly, I think she would go rapidly, but I also think she would be a handful in a decent breeze.

The potential for the chine at the bow to produce turbulence would not be a problem when running fast and level in flat water, but if she stuck her bow into the back of a wave (especially running down-wind) I think she could sheer off wildly and suddenly.

That is my opinion, but just remember that there is no guarantee that I have any idea about what Im saying!

San Juan Viejo

April 19

We woke up to a torrential down pour.

Breakfast was in a local, but very known touristy bakery. It had a feel of a European cafe: tables crammed together, busy atmosphere, music in the background accompanied by a live trumpet player filling the air with soft happy latin music. The place was called Mallorca and the specialty was mallorcas. Sweetish pastry that looked like pancakes, filled with ham, cheeses and eggs, and, covered with confectioners sugar. Delicious.

Back in the hotel we picked up Gloria and started our exploring of the Old San Juan. We took a tram, and rode around a city that is preserved within a 500 year old fort, El Morro. Impossible to capture on camera, but here are a few attempts:

First view of El Morro and throngs of kite flyers

John & Gloria in the central square

A look down on the forts many strategic levels

Enjoying the view, and the warm breeze!

Spectacular!

Look at those trade wind clouds

Too many views
San Juan is also a big port -- ship using the inlet the fort was built to protect

Lots of exercise required for this leg

What can I say?
The houses, most of them in pretty good shape are painted in colorful tones.

There is a constant breeze throughout the city, the blue cobblestones (brought as ballast by the Spanish fleet) pave the streets, giving it a unique feel and coloring. We walked for about 4 hours absorbing the history and energy.

Lovely old neighborhoods

Ill take that one!
Latin music is a constant presence, in plazas, restaurants, bars and shops. People look happy and the place is clean. Hundreds of cats roaming the streets. Ok, we are ready to move here!

The parties start early in San Juan...

And end late!
Dinner in a Spanish tapas restaurant followed by Flamenco dancing. San Juan is muy hermosa!

She was constructed of wood using typical S&S scantlings: white oak for structure, double planking of mahogany over cedar, canvas over plywood for decks and Everdur for fasteners. The boat was built by Nevins of City Island and launched in 1956.

Looking at her specifications, she had every concievable kind of electrical equipment onboard: diesel powered generators, a 115 volt D.C. system, exide batteries and battery chargers, radar, LORAN, radio telephone, television, and hi-fi.

The above image is a bit later in her life when she had been converted to a yacht and renamed.

Here are the plans.

Power was derived from twin GM-6-71 diesels turning 38" diameter propellers for a top speed of 13 knots.

Design 2278 Su Shan

As I have mentioned before, we dont have good images of every design in our archives. The above image at least gives on a sense of proportion. Su Shan was constructed of aluminum by the Royal Huisman Shipyard of Holland and launched in 1977.

Here are the "designers comments" from the time of her launch: This handsome craft is designed for a couple to cruise around the world with their teenage children. Because her owners want to cruise in shoal waters, she is a centerboarder. She is strongly built, and is roomy both below and on her flush decks.

The sides of her poop deck are rolled in like those of the last steel clipper ships. Being built of welded aluminum with closely spaced frames, she is both light and very strong.

She will not carry a spinnaker. For downwind sailing she will instead set twin jobs held out by two poles stowed on her mast. Her mainsail has a grommet and hose attachment located so as to catch rainwater.

Heres a shot of that downwind sailing arrangement.

These comments are from her owner at the time of launch: Many years of study and thought by us of the design criteria for long distance, economical, as well as high performance cruising went into the specification and layout of this vessel.

Sparkman & Stephens combined the latest design and construction techniques as well as the latest hydrodynamics. We feel that the designers efforts added to our original planning, so that we ended up with a bat exactly as we intended.

Here is an image of her deck. Note the rubber non-skid instead of teak.

And finally notice how nicely the clipper bow lends itself to the anchor handling getting the anchor well out in front of the bow without the need for any special anchor bracket.

Here are the plans.

Bulkeley was born in New York City and grew up on a farm in Hackettstown, New Jersey where he graduated from Hackettstown High School.[2] Unable to gain an appointment to Annapolis from his home state of New Jersey, he gained an appointment from the state of Texas.[3] Due to budget constraints, only the upper half of the 1933 Academy class received a commission upon graduation. John Bulkeley, noted early on for his intense interest in engineering, joined the Army Air Corps. Like the flying machines of the day, he landed hard more than once. After a year, and because the President and Congress permitted additional commissions in the Navy (as a government plan for additional jobs), Bulkeley gave up flying for the deck of a cruiser, the USS Indianapolis (CA-35), as a commissioned officer in the Navy.
Bulkeley charted an interesting course in his early years and was recognized early on by the Navys leadership. As a new ensign in the mid-1930s, he took the initiative to remove the Japanese ambassadors briefcase from a stateroom aboard a Washington-bound steamer, delivering it to Naval Intelligence a short swim later. This bold feat, the first of many in his
